As a result of the celebrity status that many successful
haridressers now enjoy we have seen a remarkable increase in the amount
of young people wishing to enter the world of hairdressing. A career
in hairdressing can offer a fantastic variety of opportunities for
those eager and willing to take up the challenge.
You may choose to start your career as a Saturday Assistant whilst
you are still at school, this will give you a good indication as to
whether you have made the right career choice. School-leavers may
start a work based training, two-year Modern Apprenticeship to achieve
an NVQ Level 2 in Hairdressing with further opportunities to take
an Advanced Modern Apprenticeship to achieve NVQ Level 3. For those
wishing to go on to salon management there is the NVQ Level 4.
When you have completed your formal training you can go on to specialise
as a Colour Specialist or as an Advanced Stylist. For those who enjoy
the creative aspects of hairdressing you can work towards joining
your salon's Art Team and get involved with competition and photographic
work. Who knows you could be the next Nicky Clarke, Charles Worthington
or Beverly C.
Long gone are the days when hairdressing was a poorly paid job for
those with little or no qualifications. After your period of training
you can expect to earn an excellent salary, which will reflect on
the work, that you have put in and the clientele you have built up.
